Newport Live is helping to organise an urgent fundraising appeal this Christmas for over 300 of the most vulnerable children and young people in Newport who are looked after and cared for. The appeal is in partnership with Newport City Council’s Children’s Services teams and supported by local volunteers, businesses, and residents. All funds raised will be used to purchase essential items and gifts and contribute towards a Christmas Party.
Councillor Laura Lacey, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for social services, said: “We’re grateful to Newport Live for once again partnering with us on the Christmas Cwtch appeal.
“This appeal will once again benefit some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the city, at a time when it is vital that they and their families get support and access to essential items.
“Last year’s appeal made a real difference to children across Newport, and it is great to see local people, volunteers, businesses and partners coming together once again to continue that good work.”
In 2023 Newport’s Christmas Cwtch Appeal raised over £6,000 and this year the aim is to match and if not exceed last year’s donations which will be used to purchase essential items and gifts that will offer some comfort during the festive season including:
- Throws/warm blankets, gloves, hats, socks, hoodies/fleece tops
- Age-appropriate toys/games
- Books and gift vouchers
- Hot water bottles
- Toiletries
- Gift Vouchers
- Christmas treats including selection boxes/biscuits/chocolate
Children’s Services staff and volunteers from local businesses, will create hampers, wrap gifts, and deliver Christmas presents and gift bags to children, young people and families identified by Newport City Council Children’s Services in need of the most help this winter.
Karl Reed, Head of Community Sport & Wellbeing at Newport Live said: “We’ve coordinated fundraising through our GoFundMe page in previous years, and once again we need your help!
“We work with amazing volunteers, local businesses, and Children’s Services to support children and young people in our communities who need help the most and these gifts mean so much at Christmas.
“We’re pleased to help launch and co-ordinate this year’s appeal and kindly ask for your donations. Every penny counts and will directly help those children, young people and families in Newport who need it most this Christmas.”
Andrea Ovey, Director of Business Development at Newport Live said: “This initiative is close to our hearts. We are committed to making a positive impact in everything that we do and this includes the lives of vulnerable children and young people in our communities.
“The generosity and support from local businesses, volunteers, and residents last year were overwhelming, and we hope to see the same spirit of giving this year. Every donation, no matter how small, helps bring joy and essential items to those who need it most during the festive season. Together, we can make a real difference.”
