Newport Live is marking the first anniversary of its hugely successful Huddle programme—a grassroots football initiative in Newport that’s been empowering girls aged 7-11 to develop their football skills, confidence, and friendships. Since launching a year ago, Huddle has provided a fun and inclusive space for over 60 girls to take part in regular football sessions, regardless of experience or ability.

To celebrate this milestone, Newport Live will host a special anniversary event on 27th September at the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales, where the community is invited to join in from 4:30pm - 6:30pm. The event will look back at the progress made over the last year and shine a light on the positive impact Huddle has had on girls’ football in Newport.

Football, Friendship, and Confidence

Over the past 12 months, Huddle has helped to inspire a new generation of girls to take up football, many of whom attended their first-ever live match through the programme. Whether it was cheering on Newport County A.F.C., witnessing the excitement of the Welsh Cup final between Cardiff City and Wrexham's women's teams, or attending a Gwalia fixture, these experiences have deepened their love for the game.

Over the past year, Huddle hasn’t just been about football—it’s been about helping girls build confidence, develop friendships, and feel part of a supportive community. It’s created a space where they can enjoy the game while growing as individuals. As one young participant put it:

"Huddle helps girls feel confident playing football. It also builds confidence for them to join a team."

A Growing Movement in Girls’ Football

Logan Busuttil, Community Sport & Physical Activity Development Coach at Newport Live, reflects on the achievements:

"Watching these girls grow in confidence and ability over the past year has been one of my proudest moments as a coach. What’s been really special is seeing them not just develop as footballers, but also as friends, with the support of their families and the community around them."

The ripple effect is clear. More girls are now joining local grassroots teams, inspired by the skills they’ve learned and the friendships they’ve built through Huddle. The programme has become a gateway for girls to explore further football opportunities, whether it’s playing for a local team or simply staying active with friends.

Looking Ahead: Empowering the Next Generation

As Huddle moves into its second year, Newport Live’s ambition is to build on its success by increasing the number of female coaches within the programme. Steve Ward, CEO of Newport Live, commented:

"Huddle has been a fantastic example of how sport can be a powerful tool for community engagement and personal growth. Seeing the girls’ confidence soar and their passion for football develop has been truly inspiring. We’re committed to expanding the programme further, particularly by increasing the number of female coaches to provide even more positive role models for the next generation. We have to ensure we have the infrastructure in the city for these programmes to continue and thrive."

This will give participants more role models to look up to, as well as help inspire even more girls to get involved in the game. Chloe Powton, Physical Activity Development Manager at Newport Live, said:

"It’s been fantastic to see how far we’ve come in just 12 months. Over 60 girls have joined Huddle and discovered new opportunities in football. Our next priority is to increase the number of female coaches in the programme, ensuring the girls continue to be inspired and supported on and off the pitch."

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has also recognised the growth of Huddle and its impact on girls’ football in Newport. Simon Lu, from the FAW, commented:

"Huddle has contributed massively to the rise in girls playing football across Newport. We’re seeing more participation in schools, clubs, and community settings, all thanks to the inclusive and empowering environment that Huddle provides. It’s setting the stage for the future of women’s football in Newport."

Celebrating Together

Newport Live invites the local community, families, and football fans to celebrate Huddle’s first year at the special event on 27th September. The evening will feature football activities, games, and the chance to look back on an incredible year for girls’ football in Newport.
