We've has an unforgettable Summer at Newport Live packed with activities, magical performances, and fun for families, kids, and everyone in between! With more than 47,000 people joining in our events and activities, it’s safe to say Newport was buzzing with energy. From swimming and cinema trips to sports takeovers and creative workshops, we saw a record number of people making the most of the summer break. Let’s dive into what made it all so special!

Big Splash 2024: A Weekend of Fun and Free Family Activities

One of the biggest highlights this summer was the Big Splash festival, which once again transformed Newport into a vibrant hub of culture and creativity. Attracting over 30,000 people, the festival filled the city with live street performances, interactive workshops, and artistic displays spread across multiple zones, including Usk Plaza, John Frost Square, and the Celebrate Stage. From giant puppets to circus performers and street dancers, with involvement and performances from local artists, choirs and community groups taking over the city centre, this free family-friendly event turned Newport into a playground of arts, culture, and outdoor fun. The Big Splash made sure there was something for everyone.

Making Waves: Swimming Success Across Venues

Water lovers had their fill this summer too, as swimming took centre stage across our venues. With 7,125 people taking part in swimming sessions at Newport International Sports Village and Active Living Centre, it’s safe to say the pools were a hot spot. Whether it was free swims, lesiure swims, family sessions for the little ones helping to improving water confidence, there was something for everyone.

We also hosted an incredible 1,833 swimming lessons for children and adults, helping boost confidence, improve techniques, and encourage a lifelong love for the water.

Cinema Magic: Big Screen Fun for All

We had plenty of popcorn-filled moments this summer, with 2,662 cinema-goers enjoying family-friendly films like Inside Out 2, Garfield, and Despicable Me 4. Whether it was a family day out or an escape from the summer heat, these blockbusters brought joy and laughter to kids and adults alike.

The cinema has always been a hub of excitement during the school holidays, and this year was no different. The reaction from families was fantastic, with many already excited about the next movie releases coming soon!

Dazzling Live Performances for the Little Ones

We brought the magic of live theatre to Newport with a series of shows that had the kids absolutely mesmerised. With 2,924 attendees across performances like You've Got Dragons, Fireman Sam, Dinosaur World Live, Milkshake Live, and Ministry of Science, there was no shortage of excitement. These shows offered something special for children of all ages, mixing storytelling with interactive elements to create unforgettable experiences.

On top of that, we hosted fun-filled sessions like Tots Music and Oh Susannah Sewing, sparking creativity and inspiring our littlest members of the community to get involved.

Community Sports and Wellbeing: Creating Opportunities for All

The heartbeat of this summer at Newport Live was undoubtedly the work of our Community Sports and Wellbeing team, which put on a fantastic range of programmes designed to get everyone involved.

The Girls Takeover programme was one of our standout successes, with 124 girls aged 12-16 stepping up to take part in a range of sports and fitness activities. From swimming and boxing to spinning and Pound Fit, these sessions were designed to empower young girls, build their confidence, and inspire them to embrace physical activity.

Our Football for All sessions welcomed 143 participants, bringing both boys and girls of all abilities together for casual, fun-filled matches. These sessions are not just about the game but about creating a space where everyone feels included and part of a team, no matter their skill level.

This summer, we also took a step off the beaten path (quite literally!) with our quirky Welly Walks. These muddy explorations brought 114 adventurous souls together, turning ordinary park strolls into exciting, nature-filled journeys.

Sport in the Park: Bringing the Fun to You

We didn’t let the sunshine go to waste! Our Sport in the Park sessions saw 1,900 people join us in the great outdoors to enjoy a variety of sports and activities. From football matches and cricket games to more creative challenges, the parks were alive with laughter, fitness, and a sense of community.
