Newport Live is proud to announce that it has officially taken over the contract for the Aspire programme in August, marking a significant step forward in providing youth engagement and educational opportunities for young people in Newport.
The Aspire programme will operate in term time, five days a week, offering an alternative educational learning environment for students in years 10 and 11. Currently, Aspire is affiliated with three high schools in Newport: Lliswerry High School, Llanwern High School, and The John Frost High School.
This groundbreaking project is specifically designed for young students who have been referred by their respective schools and who would thrive in an alternative setting outside the mainstream educational system. Aspire has strategically established provisions in three local community centres that are conveniently located near to the participating schools. These centres include the East Hub in Ringland, Newport East Community Centre in Moorland, and Duffryn Community Centre.
Aspire goes beyond traditional educational offerings by providing students with a diverse curriculum that includes GCSEs, BTEC equivalents, and work-based qualifications. Moreover, the project prioritises the development of essential personal, social, and emotional skills through a wide range of activities, including sports, cooking, life skills, outdoor education, and other engaging experiences.
"Aspire is a game-changer for young people in Newport who face challenges in mainstream education for various reasons" said Holly, Aspire Senior Youth Development Officer for Newport Live. "This project provides a unique opportunity for these individuals to excel in education and reach their full potential. We firmly believe that every young person deserves a chance to thrive academically and personally and Aspire is our commitment to providing that chance. By offering a diverse and supportive learning environment, we aim to empower these students not only with academic qualifications but also with essential life skills and the confidence to pursue their dreams. Aspire is not just an alternative; it's a transformative educational experience that paves the way for a brighter future for Newport's young people."
The ultimate goal of the Aspire project is to equip young people aged 14 to 16 in Newport with the skills and knowledge they need for their future endeavours. By fostering an environment where students can thrive, Aspire aims to prepare them for the next steps in their lives, ensuring that they gain the best possible educational experience.
Steve, CEO at Newport Live said "In taking on the Aspire programme, Newport Live welcomes a transformative educational partnership that is set to change the lives of young people in Newport. Aspire is not just an alternative; it's a great opportunity for our young people. We are proud to lead Newport City Council's Aspire alternative education programme, committed to providing every young person with the chance to thrive academically and personally. Together, we are building a brighter future for Newport."
Much like traditional schools, the Aspire project operates five days a week, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm, ensuring that students have a structured and supportive learning environment.
Newport Live is excited to be at the forefront of this educational initiative, and we are committed to making a positive impact on these young people’s lives.
