The Wales National Velodrome in Newport is one of only five internationally recognised indoor velodromes in Britain and is Wales’ official National Velodome. This summer, the Velodrome hosted TeamGB and ParalympicsGB training camps ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic games in Rio. 

The Velodrome offers a range of sessions and courses to suit all abilities detailed below.

You could also take part in a Corporate Track Cycling Event with your own organisation or attend other corporate cycling networking events.

Class Descriptions

Youth Beginners 3 & 4 week course

Introduction to the exciting discipline of Track Cycling in a safe and structured environment with a Youth friendly coach. Completion of the beginner course will allow riders to access to the ever popular Saturday morning Youth Drop in session and any of the drop in sessions during the week. 10 riders max. Riders need to be able to be capable of riding continuously for 15 minutes. *Booking essential

Adult Beginners and Improvers - 2 or 3 Week Course

Introduction to the exciting discipline of Track Cycling in a safe and structured environment. Skills learnt on the Beginner Course are extended and refined on the Improver course. Completion of the Beginner Course is normally followed by attending an Improver Course in readiness for Accreditation. Completion of the Beginner Course allows riders to access any of the drop in sessions during the week except SQT and Vets session. *Booking essential

Cycle Tots

Suitable for ages 18 months - 6 years. This session is designed for those who cannot yet ride a bike on two wheels. We use balance bikes to replace the support of stabilizers, in turn encouraging children to develop their balance and co-ordination skills.

Cycle Fun

Minimum age 4 years old. This session is for those riders who have now got the grasp of riding on two wheels and can ride along confidently. A coach will develop the child's riding skills in a safe, controlled environment. 

Learn To Ride

Suitable for ages 5 to 12 years old. A qualified coach will run a skills based session inside the velodrome during the winter. This session is for those children who are ready to get off their stabilisers but need that extra bit of help. 

Age 5-6 sessions are on Sundays 12:15-13:00 for £3.50 per session. For ages 6 and above the sessions are held on Fridays 16:30-17:30. Limited capacity for both, pre-booking is advised. 

Early Bird

Wednesday sessions run all year round.

Experience needed but this session is designed to accommodate a wide range of abilities. An experienced coach is able to offer a good workout for those who want it through to those keeping their hand in with some steady riding. Improvers can benefit from the group activity and improve their fitness and skills in readiness for accreditation. Suitable for ages 14+.

Easy Rider

Experience needed but this session is designed to accommodate a wide range of abilities. An experienced coach is able to offer a good workout for those who want it through to those keeping their hand in with some steady riding. Improvers can benefit from the group activity and improve their fitness and skills in readiness for accreditation. Suitable for ages 14+.

Endurance Lunchtime Drop-In

A coached session for all standards of riders. Session content varies depending on the season and is tailored around the requirements of the riders attending each week. Session is endurance focussed with longer drills but sprinters are welcome to attend and fit their efforts around the endurance drills. Ideal session for those training for major championships. 

Family Taster

Suitable for adults and juniors 10yrs+. These sessions enable riders to take their first pedal strokes on the steep banked wooden track in a safe and controlled environment. Bike, helmet and mitts provided. Cost of session is £15.

Skills Cycling

A qualified cycle coach teaches correct use of gears, brakes, cornering and safe riding of a bike by extending the skills learnt at Cycle Fun for older riders using the Newport Stadium at the Newport International Sports Village. Bring your own bike or try one of ours!

Lunchtime Drop-In

A coached session for all standards of riders. Session content varies and is balanced to suit the needs of riders attending with sprint drills and endurance drills. Also used as a session for riders looking to refine technique ahead of major championships where the coach can normally accommodate individual riders looking to do specific efforts in their preferred discipline (subject to numbers allowing).

SQT (Structured Quality Training)

Accredited riders only. An experienced coach will lead riders through group drills to develop and improve fitness and skills during the winter months. SQT runs from October to March. Pre booking advised as these sessions can regularly sell out. 40 riders maximum.

Track League - NEW FORMAT FOR 2017! 

Spring Track League

Spring Track League will be a 4 league format. Each league comprises of a 5 race programme, including Scratch, Points, an Elimination Race and two others - as in previous years, the exact details will vary each week. Riders sign in from 18:00 until 18:40, then attend the Riders Briefing at 18:45. Racing starts immediately after. The Riders Briefing is compulsory, so we advise you to arrive in good time. 

Spring Track League is a Regional C event, with no ranking points for the overall series. 

Masters League will be open to all riders aged 40+, and ideal for those who regularly ride SQT or Vets sessions. 

C League is a Youth League for riders beginning their racing career in U14 and U16 categories. U12s may become accredited and enter the Youth League in exceptional circumstances. 

B League is for strong Youth Riders in A & B League, as well as juniors and seniors looking to improve their skills and fitness in order to move into A League. Inexperienced Youth Riders will be expected to start in C League. 

A League is for strong and skillful riders from Youth A, Juniors and Seniors. 

For all Track Leagues: Enter online or speak to the Wales National Velodrome Reception Team in person or on the phone to guarantee your place. Track League is for accredited riders only. Proof of accreditation at another indoor velodrome can be made via endorsement on a British Cycling Race Licence. 

Veteran Drop-In

We've made some changes to our Vet sessions, ahead of the Masters Track Championships on 29th June! Accredited Riders aged 35+ (or all ages for ladies) are encouraged to attend the drop in sessions on Friday nights, where there will be endurance and sprint work built into the sessions. Sessions are led by an experienced coach, who will lead riders through group drills to develop and improve fitness and skills. Riders may attend for the full 2 and a half hours or drop in early or late. 

Youth Drop-in (Saturday)

The main youth session of the week open to all youth riders who have progressed beyond beginner level. Coached by an NCC coach and volunteer Club coaches, this session combines skills development and fitness improvement within a fun but structured environment. Different ability groups cater for all standards of riders.

Youth Drop-In (Early Evening)

This session focusses on race skills and is the feeder session to attending Track League. General skills and drills are supplemented by coach led racing to offer a stimulating and stretching session for young riders. Ideal for those who are looking for another session to add to attendance at the Saturday Youth Drop In or for those who cannot attend on a Saturday.

Accreditation Test (Ages 12+)

Riders wishing to take an Accreditation test must have been approved by their coach from the Improver Course or from attending drop in sessions. It is not possible to book onto the Accreditation unless this has taken place. Riders who have indoor Velodrome experience at other sites are welcome to attend lunchtime drop in sessions but will not be able to book straight onto an Accreditation. Riders with questions relating to the accreditation process or with outdoor Velodrome experience looking to ride indoors should contact us on 01633 656757 and ask to speak with the Track Development Officer.
